"How to Write Single Stroke Block" is designed for Signwriters and Lettering Artists who have worked on their Basic Signpainter's Brush Skills and are ready to take the next step and learn to write a Traditional Signpainter's Single Stroke Block Letter Alphabet.
Learn the tricks to create each Capital Letter, Numeral and Ampersand using correct Stroke Weight Distribution, Letter Proportions and various Cornering Techniques.
After practicing the methods you'll learn in this course using John's simple framework method, you'll soon be able to write a Single Stroke Block Alphabet freehand without the need for time consuming markouts, which is an invaluable skill for a signwriter.
This course assumes you are already familiar with Signpainting Brushes and Paints and are practiced in executing the Foundational Strokes and Cornering Techniques.
The ability to write Single Stroke Block Lettering is the cornerstone of a signwriter's skillset.
What Tools and Materials do I need?
A Size 8 Sign Lettering Brush, Lettering Enamel + Reducer, and a Mahl Stick is recommended.
For the practical training you will need at minimum a size 8 Sign Lettering Brush/Quill, suitable Sign Lettering Paint with appropriate Reducer/Brush Cleaner, Straight Edge Ruler, Set Square, Grey Lead Pencil, and a Substrate to work on.
In the course John will be using Alkyd Lettering Enamel on Bond Paper with a LetterArt SWKM Series (Medium length) Size 8 Brush and Mahl Stick.
Do I need any prior experience to do this course?
Yes, some. You should at minimum have a suitable amount of Basic Brush Stroke Practice under your belt and be able to produce all the foundational strokes at a reasonable standard in order to get the most out of this course.
This is not a brush skills training course. We jump straight into writing a Single Stroke Block alphabet which does require a basic level of competence with the brush and familiarity with lettering paint.
I've been dabbling with a lettering brush but not confident with my technique. Will this course teach me how to use a lettering brush properly?
If you have had some practice with the brush but are struggling and feel you need proper technique training it's recommended you take the "LETTERING BRUSH MASTERY" course where you will learn proper Brush Technique along with everything that is contained in this course. This course exists in its entirety within Lettering Brush Mastery.
I'm a total beginner and not sure which brushes and paints are required for signwriting. Will I learn about those things in this course?
No. If you're a beginner and are not familiar with Signpainting Tools, Materials and Brush Techniques it is recommended to start your education with "SIGN PAINTING FIRST STEPS" where you'll learn about signwriting Paints, Brushes, Materials and Processes. Then you can move on to "LETTERING BRUSH MASTERY" where you will learn Brush Technique along with everything that is contained within this course.
The "SIGN PAINTER EXPRESS" 2 course bundle contains both of the above courses at a discount, as does the "SIGN PAINTER PRO" 3 course bundle.
